The Bluebell Railway

The Bluebell Railway was formed in 1959 out of the Lewes and East Grimstead Railway Preservation Society, in response to a British Railways' demand that an unincorporated body could not operate a Light Railway Order to run trains over the old Lewes and East Grimstead railway line. The line's proximity to London has meant a solid operational front, and on the day that I was there in mid (winter) January 1981, there were goodly numbers of volunteers at work around the line.

"Hurst Green" were the two authors of a book that I have in my possession: "Order-Disorder Phenomena": Angas Hurst was my father, and Bert Green a close collaborator of his. It seemed like a photo I had to take and include here, even though its connexion to the Bluebell Railway is somewhat tenuous.

The Q1 class were built in 1942 as war time austerity locomotives, and as such, had a very austere appearance! The loco has now (2005) returned to the National Rail Museum at York.
